Nearly half of Republicans would not vote for Trump if convicted

(Patria) - About half of Republicans would not vote for Donald Trump if he is convicted, according to a poll released yesterday by Reuters and Ipsos.

The former US president, the Republican favorite for the presidential election candidate next year, appeared in court yesterday on charges of conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump pleaded not guilty on that occasion.

Two more proceedings are underway against the billionaire: one in the state of New York over alleged payments to a porn actress to keep quiet about their relationship, and another at the federal level over the removal of classified documents after he left the White House in 2021.

Respondents were asked whether they would vote for Trump next year if a jury finds him guilty. Forty-five percent of Republican voters said they would not, and 35 percent said they would. The rest said they did not know.

Asked whether they would vote for Trump if he ended up in prison, 52 percent of Republicans said they would not, and 28 percent said they would.

Trump claims he is innocent and accuses investigators of conducting a "witch hunt" to stop his political campaign.

The former president benefited from the first indictments in April, increasing his lead over his Republican rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Hina reports.

The new poll shows Trump's lead continues to grow. He currently has 47 percent support among Republicans, the same as in July, while DeSantis's popularity has fallen by six percentage points, to 13 percent.
