A maintenance worker sexually abused 30 boys in a Syrian refugee camp in southern Turkey, Turkish newspapers reported on Thursday, according to the Patria news agency.
Erk Acarer, a journalist for the Turkish newspaper Birgun who uncovered the scandal, said the case occurred in 2015 but was only now revealed after an indictment came to light. The boys were between 8 and 12 years old.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the Nizip refugee camp near Gaziantep last month, where the abuse allegedly took place. Turkey had declared this camp, which houses around 19,000 refugees, a model facility. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) stated that the abused children are receiving psychological support, and the alleged abuser is awaiting trial, Index reports.
