(Patria) - The United States government has warned its citizens residing in Iran to leave the country immediately, Reuters reported last night.
The "Virtual Embassy Tehran", operated by the American State Department, issued an urgent notice on the 12th stating: "Leave Iran immediately."
The reason why the American embassy in Iran exists in the form of a "virtual embassy" is that there is no actual American embassy in Iran. Iran, in principle, adopts a single citizenship system and does not recognize dual citizenship. Even those with dual American-Iranian citizenship are treated exclusively as "Iranians" in Iran. Accordingly, there have been cases where Americans residing in Iran have been detained for extended periods or denied due process.
The virtual embassy warned: "Even displaying any connection to the US in Iran can lead to detention," and recommended leaving via land borders through countries like Armenia or Turkey. However, it added: "Even if you decide to leave via land border, safety cannot be guaranteed," and advised: "Leave only when you deem it safe."
US citizens in Iran who cannot leave immediately have been advised: "If you cannot leave, find a safe place in your home or another secure building and stock up on food, water, medicine, and other essential supplies" and "avoid protest sites, act inconspicuously, and stay informed about the situation".
Then, it was advised: "Follow local media for updates and be prepared to adjust your plans if necessary" and "keep your mobile phone battery charged and stay in contact with family and friends to inform them of your status".
Finally, it was announced: "The US government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran" and advised using the Swiss embassy in Tehran, which acts as the US intermediary in Iran during emergencies.
Anti-government protests are currently ongoing across Iran. The United States is increasing pressure on Iran.
President Donald Trump announced yesterday that a 25% tariff would be imposed on all countries trading with Iran.
In addition, the Trump administration is reportedly considering military strikes on key Iranian regime facilities, cyberattacks, new sanctions, and expanded support for anti-government online accounts.
