(Patria) - The U.S. military launched airstrikes on dozens of Islamic State targets in Syria on Friday in retaliation for an attack on U.S. personnel, two U.S. officials said, Reuters reported.
The strikes come after President Donald Trump vowed retaliation following an attack on U.S. personnel last weekend in Syria by a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) member.
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the strikes as a large-scale response that included targeting sites across central Syria.
Two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed on Saturday in the central Syrian city of Palmyra by an attacker who targeted a convoy of U.S. and Syrian forces before being killed, according to the U.S. military. Three other U.S. soldiers were also wounded in the attack.
The U.S.-led coalition has carried out airstrikes and ground operations in Syria targeting suspected ISIS members in recent months, often with the participation of Syrian security forces.
