(Patria) - US President Donald Trump announced last night that he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before the deadline given to Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on its civilian infrastructure, Reuters reported.
Iranian state television broadcast a statement claiming that Trump accepted Iran's terms for ending the war, describing it as a "humiliating withdrawal" by the US president.
Iran announced that talks between the US and Iran will begin on Friday in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Trump's announcement on social media represented a sharp turn from earlier in the day, when he issued an emergency warning that "all of civilization will die tonight" if his demands were not met.
Trump said the last-minute deal, brokered by Pakistan, was contingent on Iran agreeing to pause oil and gas shipments through the strait.
"This will be a two-sided CEASEFIRE!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
"The reason for this is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives and are very close to a final agreement for long-term PEACE with Iran and PEACE in the Middle East."
Two White House officials confirmed that Israel also agreed to a two-week ceasefire and a halt to bombing Iran.
Trump, who has issued a series of threats in recent weeks, claimed that progress had been made between the two sides. He said Iran had presented a ten-point proposal that was a "feasible basis" for negotiations and that he expected an agreement to be "finalized and completed" during the ceasefire.
Iran agrees to deal
Shortly after Trump's announcement, Iran responded.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council announced in a statement following the announced ceasefire that negotiations would take place in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, to "finalize" the details.
The statement said the negotiations would aim to "consolidate Iran's victory on the ground and in political negotiations," the BBC reported.
The statement went beyond the ten-point plan announced by state television, stating that the United States had agreed to:
"Guarantee not to repeat aggression against Iran, Iran's continued control over the Strait of Hormuz, acceptance of Iran's uranium enrichment, lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions against Iran, invalidation of all UN Security Council and International Atomic Energy Agency resolutions, compensation to Iran through collection of passage fees through the Strait of Hormuz, withdrawal of US combat forces from the region, and cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen."
