The Syrian army killed one of the leaders of the Islamic State, along with 40 other militants in an attack in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, Syrian state media reported, according to the Patria news agency.
Syrian television news announced that it was the "oil minister" Abu al-Tajm al-Saudija. He was killed in a special operation at Syria's largest oil field, Omar, which the Islamic State captured last year in July.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that about twenty members of the Islamic State were killed in an airstrike on the oil field, including 12 foreign nationals.
