Police Union after brutal murder on Vilsonovo: This system has reached its peak and cannot get any better

(Patria) - The Union of Police Officers, Civil Servants and Employees of Sarajevo Canton issued a statement today regarding yesterday's brutal murder on Sarajevo's Vilsonovo promenade.

"Regarding the brutal murder in Sarajevo that occurred on June 10, 2024, in broad daylight on one of the busiest promenades in the city... What can be said, what can be stated, without offending 'society' and the 'system'!?

The Union of Police Officers, Civil Servants and Employees of Sarajevo Canton most strongly condemns the mentioned murder. No one has the right to take someone's life just because they offended someone, had a disagreement, due to inaction, or anything else.

If we all acted that way and everyone took matters into their own hands, we would head towards complete anarchy in society. Are we far from that?

I think this system has reached its peak and cannot get any better. This has been shown countless times so far. Now, the ignorant will only take security services and the judicial system as an example.

Yes, they also contributed to this situation to some extent, but not enough to be the general and main culprits for this type of event, which is certainly condemnable.

In a society where in the 21st century we cheer for a new tram, where we open intersections and create spectacles for the masses, where we declare the purchase of a helicopter a 'great victory', where we procure body cameras for police officers who lack even uniforms and shoes.

Where every ignoramus conducts investigations and passes judgment, even though they don't work in the police, prosecution, or courts, nor have they ever encountered the judicial and executive state apparatus in any segment other than running a red light and illegal parking.

Where the police are short by 700 officers, even though we deceive the public by saying we are hiring 700 new police officers, in a society where you cannot publicly express your qualifications and critical views without being attacked by 'the party' and important figures.

In a society where the criteria of values are so distorted that kitsch and trash have flooded our media spaces, pornography is omnipresent on most channels at any time of day or night, and culture and cultural heritage are dying out.

Long ago, and not so long ago, the head of the Union of Police Officers, Civil Servants and Employees of Sarajevo Canton, Viktor Ćatić, predicted that such and similar situations would occur, that police officers, civil servants, and employees in the Police Administration and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton were in such a 'machine' that they were giving their last atom of strength to maintain the security situation at some level.

But, those in charge, instead of dealing with the accumulated problems, dealt with this Union and its leader, trying to silence him.

And the academic community is silent. Silent and not speaking out. Not making statements. For a long time, the media space has been occupied by pseudo-experts in security who have never handcuffed anyone, such as Džemal Murga and Dragan Mioković (and if they did, it was in the last century, but I highly doubt it even then).

And such top experts, who daily harm the members of the Union and other employees in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton with their inappropriate statements and ignorance, cause particular harm to all other citizens in Sarajevo Canton and beyond, fueling the already heated situation by adding fuel to the fire, giving wings to the population that seeks role models in negative behaviors, stereotypically identifying with individuals from the criminal milieu.

And the academic community, it remains silent, does not refute, and even if it does refute, we have not heard that voice.

Therefore, the Union continues to stand firmly with all its members, employees, and all citizens, both of Sarajevo Canton and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina within its area of operation, and will continue to point out anomalies through its work, the elimination of which would bring the labor-legal status of its members, and primarily their safety and the safety of all citizens, to an adequate level.

And finally, to protect the dignity of our members, we must emphasize to the esteemed representatives in the assembly seats of Sarajevo Canton that the 'policeman in the neighborhood' project has been current and existing in Sarajevo Canton for almost 20 years.

Therefore, we expect better and more quality proposals from them for solving the enormous accumulated problems," reads the statement from the Union signed by its president, Viktor Ćatić.
