Son of Sudanese army chief dies in accident in Turkey

(Patria) - The son of the commander of the Sudanese army and de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who was seriously injured in a traffic accident, died in hospital, Turkish media reported on Friday.

Mohammed Fattah al-Burhan Rahmane was riding a motorcycle in the Turkish capital Ankara in March when he collided with a vehicle. He was taken to hospital where he was admitted to intensive care.

He died in hospital, private news agency DHA reported on Friday, according to AFP.

The conflict between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has been dividing the country for more than a year.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and millions have left their homes in what the United Nations has called the "world's largest displacement crisis." It has caused an acute food shortage and a humanitarian crisis that puts the country's population at risk of starvation.

In November last year, the son of the Somali president was involved in a traffic accident in Turkey. Mohammed, the son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was found guilty by a court of involuntary manslaughter when the car he was driving collided with a delivery driver on a motorcycle in Istanbul.

Yunus Emre Gocer, a father of two, died in hospital six days later.

In January, a Turkish court fined Mohammed less than $1,000 for the accidental crash and killing of the delivery driver, although prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of up to six years.

Turkey has had close relations with Somalia over the past ten years and is the leading economic partner of the Horn of Africa nation. The two countries also have close military ties.
