Son of Ali Khamenei is the new supreme leader

(Patria) - The son of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been appointed his successor, Iranian state media reported.

Ali Khamenei died at the very beginning of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.

His son Mojtaba Khamenei (56) is a cleric who has never held a state position and survived the military attacks on Iran.

In the Iranian political system, the Supreme Leader has the final say on all key state issues. The Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 members, decided on the successor after Khamenei's death.

Meanwhile, after his death, a temporary three-member state leadership was formed, consisting of: President Masoud Pezeshkian, Head of the Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, cleric Alireza Arafi, head of the Basij paramilitary organization.

Khamenei never publicly named his successor.
