Six Secret Service agents disciplined for failures during 2024 assassination attempt on Trump

(Patria) - Six Secret Service agents who were on duty during last year's assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania have been suspended for periods ranging from 10 to 42 days, the agency announced, Reuters reported.

The Secret Service did not identify the agents or disclose specific reasons for their suspensions. An armed attacker opened fire at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, while the candidate was speaking on stage. The attacker accessed a nearby rooftop with a direct line of sight to the former president.

Trump and others were injured, and one bystander and the attacker were killed. Multiple investigations were launched against the Secret Service, and its director resigned.

Trump said in an interview set to air on Saturday that the Secret Service erred by not placing an agent on the roof and not including local police in the communication system.

"So, mistakes were made. And that should not have happened," he said during an interview for the show "My View with Lara Trump" on Fox News.

Secret Service Director Sean Curran, who was the agent in charge of Trump's security at the rally, said in a statement: "The agency has taken many steps to ensure such an event never happens again in the future."

The Secret Service said it has implemented 21 of the 46 recommendations made by congressional oversight bodies. Sixteen other recommendations are in progress, and nine were not directed at the Secret Service. The Secret Service said it is implementing protective measures for golf courses. After the assassination attempt in Butler, a man with a gun hid near a golf course owned by Trump in Florida with the intention of killing the then-Republican presidential candidate.
