(Patria) - The Republic of Croatia is proceeding with the project of building a nuclear waste repository at the Čerkezovac, Trgovska Gora location. Bosnia and Herzegovina has previously established its position of opposition to this intention.
Senad Šepić, president of the Independent Bloc and former member of the BiH Parliament, who is one of the most vocal opponents of the construction of this repository and the initiator of the citizens' initiative Trgovska mora - reci, NE MOŽE (Trgovska must - say, NO WAY), commented:
“The current authorities in the Republic of Croatia, despite knowing that there is a complete consensus and opposition in BiH to the construction of this repository, are behaving in a non-neighborly manner, continuing to unilaterally work on its realization and trying to push it through deceitfully. This must not and will not pass. I call on and demand from the Presidency, the Council of Ministers, and the Parliament of BiH an urgent and strong reaction – to officially demand from the authorities in the Republic of Croatia to abandon this attempt and seek another solution and location. They must understand that, even if the BiH institutions are lenient, the people living in that area, which is also a protected nature park and the Una National Park, will never accept it.
Let them consider how people in Zagreb would feel, for example, if someone built a waste repository for them at Sljeme, or in Dubrovnik, if BiH disposed of its waste near them, on the border? They would be against it, of course, and that is why they must understand and accept our right, the right of BiH and the people who live here, not to have a nuclear waste repository built practically in our backyard and to destroy the future of this beautiful part of our country.
I also appeal to our friends from the EU and the USA, to the international community to get involved and help, to not allow this arrogant and non-neighborly approach by the current authorities in the Republic of Croatia, because further escalation of relations in this area will not benefit anyone, and they must be aware that BiH and our people cannot and will not go backwards; we are fighting for our health and the future of our country and children,” stated Senad Šepić, president of the Independent Bloc.
