Senator Bernie Sanders: Biden may not be ideal, but he must be the presidential candidate

(Patria) - Senator Bernie Sanders, a figure of the American left, called today for Joe Biden to remain the Democratic presidential candidate despite pressure on the president to withdraw due to doubts about his health.

"Enough! Mr. Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will be the candidate and he must be the candidate.

And with an effective campaign that speaks to working families about their needs, he will not only defeat Trump, but he will do so by a wide margin," the left-wing representative stated with conviction in a column in the New York Times.

He called on Democrats to stop arguing and joking.

Since the disastrous debate on June 27 against the 78-year-old Republican billionaire, Joe Biden has been bombarded with fierce criticism regarding his physical and mental condition.

About twenty parliamentarians are now calling on him to resign. However, the leading Democrat assured again yesterday in Michigan that he will indeed be the candidate.

"I am the candidate and we will win," Biden told his supporters in Detroit.

All polls after the TV debate show that Joe Biden's catastrophic performance, although it raises Americans' concerns about his ability to govern long-term, has not significantly shifted the electoral lines.

However, many seem to give Republican Trump a relative advantage for November. The most worrying trend related to the Democrat remains his persistent lag in certain decisive states.

Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden's opponent in the 2020 Democratic primaries, expressed his support for him today, saying he would do "everything in his power to ensure President Biden is re-elected".

"Yes. I know this: Mr. Biden is old, he is prone to gaffes, he has a stiff gait, and he had a disastrous debate against Trump.

But I also know this: presidential elections are not a popularity contest. They neither begin nor end with a 90-minute debate," Sanders added.

The eighty-two-year-old senator also cited the recent French parliamentary elections as an example:

"It is time to learn a lesson from the progressive and centrist forces in France who, despite their deep political differences, united this week to directly defeat the far-right extremism."
