The US Senate tonight acquitted former President Donald Trump of charges of inciting insurrection and the deadly attack by his supporters on the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress.
57 senators voted to convict Trump, while 47 voted to acquit, but a two-thirds majority of 100 senators, or 67 senators, was required for conviction.
In the Senate vote, which has 50 Democratic and 50 Republican senators, seven Republicans joined the Democrats.
He can run for another term
Trump left the Oval Office on January 20 and is the first former US president to be tried after leaving office. Had the Senate convicted him, Trump could have lost the right to run for another term.
Much of the trial in recent days focused on how much Trump knew about the actions of his supporters who stormed the Congress, seeking to prevent members of both chambers from confirming Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election in November.
Conviction was unlikely because at least 17 Republicans would have had to join 50 Democrats to find Trump guilty.
The indictment passed in the House of Representatives on January 13, supported by ten Republicans, charged Trump with inciting his supporters to storm the Congress building on January 6 while lawmakers were holding a session to confirm the victory of his opponent Joe Biden.
The US Senate on Tuesday evening declared the trial of Donald Trump constitutional, thus paving the way for a full trial of the former president on charges of inciting violence, and the trial in the Senate began on Wednesday.
