(Patria) – The US Senate did not achieve a majority vote to overturn President Trump's veto of a resolution limiting the US President's powers to declare war on Iran.
49 senators voted in favor of the resolution requiring the president to seek congressional approval for entering into war, while 44 members voted against it. Given that the Senate has 100 members, a two-thirds majority of at least 67 votes was required for this decision.
Recall that the resolution, initiated by US Democrats, was adopted earlier this year by the predominantly Republican Senate and the Democrat-dominated House of Representatives.
Trump vetoed the resolution on Wednesday, calling it 'very insulting'.
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, who led the initiative to pass the resolution, responded to Trump's accusations that Democrats were merely doing their job and demanding powers that belong to them regarding decisions on the use of military force.
- This is not about party politics. This move has been supported by both parties from the very beginning, Kaine said, adding that the resolution's goal is 'to prevent a hasty entry into an unnecessary war'.
This is the seventh time the US president has vetoed legislation during his three-year term, none of which have been overridden, Reuters reports.
