The US Senate, which was supposed to conclude Donald Trump's impeachment trial for inciting rebellion today, suddenly decided to call witnesses after it was revealed last night that Trump, during the attack on Congress, told a Republican congressional leader that the attackers were more concerned about his election loss than the representatives.
Former US President Donald Trump told House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy by phone during the deadly attack by his supporters on Congress on January 6th that the mob was more concerned about his election loss than the representatives, said Republican Representative Herrera Beutler.
News of this phone call emerged a few hours before Trump's trial was to continue on Saturday before the Senate, which is divided on whether to find the former president guilty of rebellion.
Requested Approval to Call Witnesses About the Call
Following this news, several Democratic senators urged the Democratic representatives serving as prosecutors to seek approval to call witnesses who could provide details about the phone call.
Much of the trial in recent days has focused on how much Trump knew about the actions of his supporters who stormed Congress, attempting to prevent members of both houses from certifying Joe Biden's election victory in the US presidential election in November.
Herrera Beutler, one of the ten Republicans who voted with Democrats in the House of Representatives last month to impeach Trump, recalled the details of the phone conversation between Trump and McCarthy on Friday night.
Democrats want to call her as a witness.
"Well, Kevin, those people are more concerned about the election than you are," Beutler quoted Trump as saying. According to her, Trump initially denied that his supporters were involved in the attack, claiming that the mob from the ranks of the leftist Antifa was to blame, which McCarthy dismissed as a false claim.
It is not known whether Trump's lawyers will call witnesses.
