Sefić Sentenced to 14.5 Years for Deaths of Students

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo has imposed a first-instance sentence of 14.5 years on Sanjin Sefić for causing a traffic accident in which two students, Selma Agić and Edita Malkoč, were killed in October 2016. The other four accused of aiding Sefić have been acquitted of guilt, reports Patria.

Sefić is accused of hitting and killing two students, Selma Agić from Bugojno and Edita Malkoč from Bosanska Krupa, with his car on October 10, 2016, while running a red light. The court stated in its verdict that Sefić's car was traveling at 65 km/h, noting that the prosecution's expert witness, Ševal Kovačević, did not prove that the car was traveling at 105 km/h, nor that the contact between the vehicle and the pedestrians occurred at a crosswalk.

Sefić fled the scene immediately and crossed into Serbia via the Uvac border crossing during the night. He was arrested on October 11 and extradited on January 9, 2017. The trial began in March 2017. It was postponed several times, and the families of the victims claimed the process was being intentionally delayed.

In addition to Sefić, Sara Sefić, Dino Alić, Amar Salihović, and Saud Nišić were tried for aiding Sefić after the commission of the crime.

Students from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo gathered in front of the court at 9:30 AM to show support for the Agić and Malkoč families.
