(Patria) - As the death toll in Gaza approaches 20,000, the UN refugee chief warns that current estimates are far below the actual number of fatalities.
The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says more than 18,700 people have been killed in the enclave since the start of the war.
"We have yet to see what lies beneath the rubble. These estimates of (around 18,000) dead – when you start digging under the rubble, the statistics change radically," Martin Griffiths said in an interview with the Financial Times.
He cited the example of the earthquake in Turkey earlier this year, when the death toll "approximately doubled" after a strenuous search and rescue operation to retrieve bodies trapped under collapsed buildings.
With deadly Israeli bombing continuing in both the north and south of Gaza, Griffiths believes the conflict is yet to reach its halfway point.
"We have weeks and weeks to go before the end of this savage war," Griffiths added, as reported by RSE.
