(Patria) - French President Emmanuel Macron's comments on the possible deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine are pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war, stated the head of the Russian Intelligence Service (SVR).

Macron said last week that European countries could send troops to Ukraine, although he warned that there was no consensus at this stage.

The US and key European allies subsequently stated that they do not plan to send ground troops to Ukraine, reports Hina.

"This shows a high degree of irresponsibility of today's European leaders, in this case, the President of France," Russian news agencies quoted SVR Director Sergey Naryshkin as saying in an interview on state television.

After hosting a conference of about twenty European countries last week, Macron admitted that there was no consensus on sending troops from Western countries to Ukraine, but emphasized that this option could not be ruled out to ensure that Russia does not win.

- It is sad to see, observe, and understand that the negotiation capacity of the current elites in Europe and the North Atlantic is at a very low level - Naryshkin added.
