New York Police Chief Edward Caban Resigns

(Patria) - The Chief of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Edward Caban resigned yesterday.

His resignation followed a week after FBI agents seized his phone during multiple federal corruption investigations involving several high-ranking city officials.

Caban, appointed to the position in July 2023, became the first Hispanic to head the New York City Police Department since its founding 178 years ago.

In a statement issued through his lawyers, Caban said he was informed that he is not the subject of any investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's office and that he will continue to cooperate with investigators.

"I need to be fully focused on the NYPD. However, the noise that has arisen following the latest developments has made this impossible and prevents me from doing the important work this city demands.

Therefore, I have decided that it is in the best interest of the NYPD to resign as Chief," he stated in the release.

Last week, investigators seized the mobile phones of Caban and his twin brother, James Caban, a former police officer who was fired in 2001 and has since managed a nightclub security service.

Agents also seized phones and searched the homes of several high-ranking city officials in the administration of Mayor Eric Adams, who became the second African American to lead New York City government in 2022.

In November, FBI agents also seized Mayor Adams' electronic devices.

In an address to the city administration yesterday, Adams said he is cooperating with investigators and urged his subordinates to do the same.

He praised Caban for managing to reduce crime in the city during his 14 months in office, but added that his resignation is "the best decision at this time."
