Seven Tech Giants to Develop AI for the Pentagon

(Patria) - The Pentagon announced yesterday that it has reached agreements with seven leading artificial intelligence companies to use their advanced systems on the Department of Defense's classified networks.

SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services will be integrated into Pentagon network environments at impact levels 6 and 7 to streamline data synthesis, elevate situational awareness, and improve warfighter decision-making in complex operational environments, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"These agreements accelerate the transformation toward establishing the U.S. military as an AI-first fighting force and will enhance our warfighters’ ability to maintain decision-making superiority across all domains of warfare," the Pentagon stated.

Another AI giant, Anthropic, is in a dispute with the Pentagon over safeguards for how the military might use its AI tools.

As a result, the Pentagon designated Anthropic as high-risk last month, prohibiting its use by the Pentagon and its contractors.

Tech publication The Information reported Tuesday that Google has joined a growing list of companies that have signed a contract allowing the Department of Defense to use their AI models for classified work.

The contract allows the Pentagon to use Google's AI for any lawful government purpose, the report added, placing it alongside OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI, which also have contracts to use AI models for classified work.
