Five Turkish police officers and two civilians, one of whom was a child, were killed in a car bomb attack near Diyarbakir attributed to Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels, the government announced new data after initial information about three victims, reports the Patria News Agency.
The target of the attack was a police checkpoint on the highway connecting Diyarbakir with Batman, said Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus.
The predominantly Kurdish southeast of Turkey has recently been hit by a wave of violence after the ceasefire between the Turkish state and the illegal Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) collapsed last year.
The PKK party is commemorating on Monday the date on which it took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. Since then, 40,000 people have been killed in clashes.
