Seven years after reconstruction: Old Stone Bridge in Konjic a tourist attraction

The Old Stone Bridge in Konjic was opened on this day in 2009 after being renovated in its original form. A total of 2,408 blocks of tufa stone, more than 10 tons of lead, and nearly five tons of clamps were built into the renovated Old Stone Bridge, and everything was fixed with mortar made as in the old days, from sand, lime and ground brick, reports the Patria news agency.

The bridge was destroyed in early March 1945 by the German occupier during the withdrawal of their troops.

Reconstruction work on the bridge began on May 12, 2006. The Old Stone Bridge has six arches, and since 2003 it has been on the list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The length of the bridge is 101.80 meters and the width 5.25 meters. The total cost of reconstruction amounted to about 5,300,000 KM. This bridge is considered the point where Herzegovina meets Bosnia, and along with the Old Bridge in Mostar and the Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic Bridge in Visegrad, it is one of the most beautiful structures from the Ottoman era. It connects the two banks of the Neretva River and links the two sides of the old town of Konjic.

The Old Bridge in Konjic was built in 1682, during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV, as the last major Ottoman structure in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was built by Haseci Aliaga from Blagaj.
