(Patria) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner this evening after several weeks of disputes over the government's economic direction, Reuters reports.
The Bild newspaper earlier reported that Lindner had recommended holding early elections as a solution to the budget deadlock, a proposal that Scholz rejected.
It is not clear whether Lindner's dismissal will also lead to the Free Democrats (FDP) leaving the coalition, reports RFE/RL.
Without the FDP, Scholz could continue to lead a minority government, either alone with his Social Democrats or with the Greens, the second-largest party, relying on an ad hoc parliamentary majority.
