Scholz denies Germany intends to reduce support for Ukraine

(Patria) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected speculation that Berlin plans to reduce support for Ukraine. He said this in an interview with Sat.1, and excerpts from the interview were published by the news agency DPA.

Scholz promised that "nothing" could spoil Germany's promises to provide support to Kyiv. He also finds the debate about whether Berlin intends to reduce military support to Kyiv surprising. He recalled that the German government planned to allocate four billion euros in military aid to Kyiv next year - more than any other European country, TASS reported.

In addition, according to the G7 decision, Kyiv will receive a loan of 50 billion euros from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets. This, as Scholz said, will enable Ukraine to purchase necessary weapons.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported on August 17 that Germany would limit military aid to Ukraine because, according to current budget planning, there are no available funds for this purpose. The reason is the austerity measures being taken by the Federal Chancellery and the Ministry of Finance.

Germany is the second-largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States. Berlin has so far allocated funds for military support to Kyiv and promised future spending amounting to about 28 billion euros. According to the budget agreement for 2025, 4 billion euros will be allocated for military support to Ukraine - half the amount from the current year.
