Scholz says Germany needs to speed up deportations of those whose asylum claims are rejected

(Patria) - Chancellor Olaf Scholz says Germany needs to start deporting "on a large scale" migrants who do not have the right to stay in the country, AP reported.

Scholz's comments in an interview with the weekly Der Spiegel were published on Friday, when a
leading German opposition figure called on the center-left chancellor to abandon his
contentious coalition partners and instead form a government with conservatives to tackle migration issues.

Scholz has signaled an increased willingness to take personal responsibility for migration over the past two weeks, after regional elections in which voters punished his three-party coalition. Mainstream conservatives won the elections, and the far-right Alternative for Germany made significant gains.

Last week, Scholz announced legislation that would make it easier to deport failed asylum seekers. He met with opposition leader Friedrich Merz and two leading state governors to discuss ways to tackle migration – a topic on which his opponents have relentlessly attacked the government.

On Monday, the government informed the European Commission about temporary border controls at the Polish, Czech and Swiss borders. Shelters for migrants and refugees have been filling up in recent months as a significant number of asylum seekers are added to more than a million Ukrainians who have arrived since the beginning of Russian aggression.

In Friday's interview, Scholz reiterated that "too many are coming".

"We must finally deport on a large scale those who do not have the right to stay in
Germany," he said, adding that "we must deport more and faster".
