(Patria) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived at Meseberg Palace, near Berlin, where he will have a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel this evening. Ahead of the talks, the Russian President and the German Chancellor addressed the public.
Merkel expressed hope that peace will prevail again in Ukraine at the beginning of the next school year. She announced that she intends to discuss the crisis in Ukraine and the deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Donbas with the Russian President.
“We will discuss the possible formation of a United Nations mission that could play a role in the (Ukrainian) peace process. Germany is ready to take responsibility for this,” Merkel stated at a press conference, Sputnik agency reports.
She announced that Ukraine will remain a transit country for Russian gas even after the launch of Nord Stream 2. In addition to Ukraine, topics of discussion will also include the Iranian nuclear program and Syria, where positive progress is being observed, Merkel stated. She is confident that all contentious issues can be resolved through dialogue.

Putin emphasized that Russia attaches great importance to the development of cooperation with Germany, with energy being a priority.
He added that the demand for Russian gas is constantly increasing, by 13 percent this year.
“Its implementation will enable the modernization of the European gas pipeline system, diversification of supply routes, and minimization of transit risks. It will enable meeting Europe's growing demand for energy. However, it does not exclude the possibility of gas transit through Ukraine,” Putin stated.
He reiterated that this energy project is purely economic and does not preclude the possibility of gas transit through Ukrainian territory.
He stated that everything must be done for Syrian refugees to return to their country and that Syria needs help for reconstruction and to ensure the safe return of refugees to their homes.
Putin described his presence at a wedding in Austria today as a private visit, which was “very pleasant.”
