Lavrov and Rubio to meet next week on sidelines of UN General Assembly

(Patria) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his American counterpart Marco Rubio will meet and hold talks next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

- It is clear that they will discuss a wide range of issues, both bilateral and multilateral. There is no specific agenda, but a meeting is planned - said Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, yesterday, as reported by the RIA Novosti news agency.

The meeting of the two senior officials will follow after US President Donald Trump this week expressed "disappointment" with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin regarding the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, where Russia has been waging war since 2022.

Trump, who has managed to get very close to Putin in his second term in the White House, also said he is ready to impose new sanctions against Russia, but on the condition that Europeans stop buying Russian oil, the sale of which is one of the main sources of funding for Russia's war machine against Ukraine.

The US President hosted Putin in Alaska a month ago, the first such meeting of a Western leader with Putin since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, but their meeting did not result in any progress.
