Šarović for NAP: BiH will not allow import of GM products, we adhere to EU standards

Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Mirko Šarović denied claims that BiH will allow the import of GM products, provided that such products are also labeled as GM.

Šarović told the news agency Patria that when it comes to GMOs, BiH has EU standards that it fully applies, so there will be no permission for the import of GM products into BiH.

A real drama has been unfolding at BiH's borders in recent days. Importers are pressuring the Council of Ministers, seeking permission to import more than 40 trucks of dangerous GM soybean meal into the Bosnian and Herzegovinian market, which inspectors are keeping blocked at the Gradiška and Orašje border crossings.

Patria's interlocutors claim that importers are now looking for a way to import GM meal through the Gradiška border crossing, as well as to legalize the import, so that they can continue trading in the future. The most vocal are poultry farmers, who use this meal to make poultry feed.
According to Patria's findings, importers are pressuring the Ministry of Trade. One of the possible scenarios is that the ministry will allow the import of GM products into BiH, but on the condition that importers and distributors register for the trade of GM products, and that such products are also labeled as GM products.

- That is absolutely untrue – said Šarović.

- When it comes to GMOs, we have EU standards that we follow – added the minister.

Nutritionists warn that GM food is one of the biggest threats to human health today. Food grown in this way leads to disruptions in the functioning of the human body, leaving unforeseeable consequences for health, especially in children.

Earlier, more than 130 trucks of dangerous meal were imported into BiH, claims this source, but the import was stopped a few days ago, after inspectors discovered a criminal network, writes Patria.
