Police to address traffic congestion on the road to Bjelašnica and Igman in Lukavica

The problem of traffic congestion from Sarajevo to the Olympic mountains Bjelašnica and Igman, via East Sarajevo and back on weekends during the winter season, will be resolved by increased engagement of traffic police. This was announced by the Mayor of East Sarajevo, Nenad Samardžija, at today's meeting with the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Elmedin Konaković, after the media warned about kilometer-long queues forming due to the traffic light in Lukavica, where the green light from the direction of Sarajevo and towards Sarajevo lasts 25 seconds, and the green light towards Lukavica lasts 75 seconds, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

As Samardžija pointed out, police officers will speed up traffic at key intersections, and this temporary method will resolve the identified traffic 'bottlenecks' while the permanent solution to traffic congestion on this route is the construction of a roundabout.

At the meeting, which was also attended by the President of the Assembly of the City of East Sarajevo, Miroslav Lučić, information and experiences were exchanged on numerous other issues and current infrastructure projects, as well as on possibilities for cooperation, with a special emphasis on the organization of the 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF).

Konaković informed the guests about the decision of the Government of Sarajevo Canton, which this year provides for the allocation of 16 million KM for the reconstruction of infrastructure on Bjelašnica, and acquainted them with the project of building new vertical transport – a six-seater chairlift on Bjelašnica, which is also one of the priorities for improving the tourist offer.

Readiness was also expressed for a joint approach to higher levels of government in order to timely secure all necessary preconditions, primarily financial, for the organization of this important sports event.

Also discussed were numerous other concrete projects through which joint cooperation could be achieved in the field of tourism, as well as municipal economy, infrastructure projects for returnees to the area of East Sarajevo, solving the problem of stray dogs, and possibilities for cooperation between the Sarajevo Development Agency SERDA and the City Development Agency of East Sarajevo RAIS.
