(Patria) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is appealing for Israel to be excluded from international cultural events like the Eurovision Song Contest due to the military campaign in Gaza, just as Russia was banned after invading Ukraine.
- We cannot allow double standards, not even in culture. I believe no one was shocked three years ago when Russia was excluded from international competitions like Eurovision after it attacked Ukraine.
Therefore, Israel should not participate either - said Sanchez, a socialist and long-time critic of Israeli policy in the occupied Palestinian territories.
He called on artists to stand up for values such as democracy and peace, criticizing those who defend a "bland and silent cultural sector".
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on Sanchez's statements.
Eurovision, which emphasizes its political neutrality, once again faced controversy during the final in Switzerland, where Austrian singer JJ won, and Israel's Yuval Raphael received the most audience votes.
