Saharan dust covers Athens, social media flooded with videos of orange sky

(Patria) - Athens and southern parts of Greece were covered in Saharan dust yesterday, with shades of yellow and orange creating surreal scenes.

Clouds of dust, carried across the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa, covered the Acropolis and other Athenian landmarks, AP reports.

Strong southerly winds carried the dust from the Sahara, making the Greek capital look like a "Martian" filter was used for photography in the last hours of daylight.

The sky is expected to clear today as the winds shift and move the dust.

News about Athens being "orange" quickly spread through global media, with video clips also shared by social media profiles dealing with globally current news.

The unusual meteorological phenomenon also caught the eye of the Romanian Embassy in Greece, which also shared photos of Athens covered in Saharan dust on social network X.
