(Patria) - The United States yesterday imposed sanctions on the head of the cabinet of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban due to his alleged involvement in corruption in that country, the US Department of the Treasury announced.
Antal Rogan, who is in charge of intelligence services and media control, is accused of "orchestrating corruption schemes to control strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy and divert revenue to himself and loyal supporters of his political party".
Neither Rogan nor the spokesperson for the Hungarian Government responded to requests for comment.
- The United States will not hesitate to hold accountable individuals, such as Rogan, who use the power of their office to enrich themselves and their friends illegally at the expense of their country and their fellow citizens - said high-ranking Treasury official Bradley T. Smith.
Rogan has been a close associate of Viktor Orban for decades, leading his media machine as well as election campaigns. Relations between Hungary and the US have become increasingly tense during Joe Biden's presidency, mainly due to Budapest's close ties with Moscow despite the war in Ukraine.
Orban was one of the loudest supporters of newly elected President Donald Trump in Europe. Trump will be inaugurated as US President on January 20.
