(Patria) – US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday imposing sanctions against Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, as well as eight commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
Trump explained that his decision on sanctions is due to the 'aggressive behavior of the Iranian regime in recent weeks, including the downing of a US drone.'
- In addition to existing sanctions, we have imposed additional sanctions against the office of the Supreme Leader, thereby blocking additional assets worth several billion dollars, stated US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
He announced that the US will impose sanctions on three more Iranian leaders, while Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will also be sanctioned by the end of the week.
Spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abbas Mousavi announced via Twitter that Iran is permanently closing diplomatic ties with the US due to sanctions against Supreme Leader Khamenei and Foreign Minister Zarif, agencies report.
