(Patria) - The United States yesterday lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaai, just days before his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
The US Department of the Treasury announced that it has removed the global terrorist designations for al-Sharaai and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Great Britain also lifted sanctions on the Syrian president yesterday, a day after the United Nations Security Council did the same.
An EU spokesperson stated yesterday that the UN decision will also be reflected in EU measures.
Al-Sharaa and Khattab were previously subjected to financial sanctions targeting the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda.
In April, Great Britain lifted some sanctions on Syria, while the EU lifted its economic sanctions in May, but restrictions related to weapons and security remain in place.
Al-Sharaa became President of Syria in January after rebel forces led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group overthrew Bashar al-Assad in a lightning offensive.
