US on high alert due to Iranian threat after Israeli attack in Syria

(Patria) - The United States is on alert and preparing for a possible Iranian attack on Israeli or American assets in the region in response to the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria, a U.S. official said on Friday, Reuters reported.

"We are definitely at a high state of vigilance," the official said, confirming a CNN report that the attack could come next week.

Israeli warplanes are suspected of bombing the Iranian embassy in Damascus on Monday, killing an Iranian military commander, marking a major escalation in Israel's war with its regional adversaries.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that seven Iranian military advisors were killed in the attack, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force, an elite foreign espionage and paramilitary force. Iran has said it reserves the right to a "decisive response."

U.S. President Joe Biden discussed the threat from Iran in a phone call on Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Our teams have been in regular and continuous contact since then. The United States fully supports Israel's defense against threats from Iran," said a senior official of the Biden administration.
