US Sends Additional Forces to the Middle East as Tensions Rise

(Patria) - The United States is sending a small number of additional troops to the Middle East amid escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah, the Pentagon said, refusing to specify the exact number or mission of the deployed forces, Reuters reported.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are deploying a small number of additional U.S. military personnel to augment our forces already in the region," said Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, to reporters.

After nearly a year of war against Hamas in Gaza, Israel is shifting its focus to its northern border, where Hezbollah is firing rockets at Israel in support of its ally Hamas.

The Israeli army on Monday attacked Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and the northern region near Syria in its most widespread strikes. An Israeli strike on Monday evening on the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital targeted a senior Hezbollah leader, Ali Karaki, head of the southern front, a security source told Reuters.

U.S. President Joe Biden's administration has sought to contain the conflict in Gaza and has repeatedly called for the border crisis between Israel and Lebanon to be resolved diplomatically. This call for diplomacy was emphasized by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in daily conversations with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Experts question whether Iran would remain on the sidelines if the existence of Lebanese Hezbollah were threatened and say that U.S. troops could also become targets across the Middle East if a regional war breaks out.
