US threatens to block new UN Security Council vote on Gaza ceasefire

(Patria) - The United Nations Security Council will likely vote on Tuesday on Algeria's bid for this body to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, diplomats said, a move the United States has hinted it will veto.

Algeria proposed an initial draft resolution more than two weeks ago. But US
Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield quickly said the text could jeopardize "sensitive negotiations" aimed at mediating a pause in the war, Reuters reported.

Algeria requested on Saturday that the Council vote on Tuesday, diplomats said.

Adoption of a UN Security Council resolution requires at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, or Russia.

"The United States does not support action on this draft resolution. If it comes to a vote as drafted, it will not be adopted," Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement on Saturday.

"It is crucial that other parties give this process the best chance of success, rather than pushing measures that put it, and the opportunity for a lasting resolution of hostilities, in jeopardy," Thomas-Greenfield said.
