US again vetoed a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza

The United States today vetoed the latest attempt by the United Nations Security Council to call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip, where the official number of killed Palestinians has approached 30,000.

The draft resolution proposed by Algeria received broad support in the Security Council with 13 votes in favour out of 15 member states. The US was the only member to vote against, and given that it is a permanent member of the Security Council, the resolution was rejected by their opposition. Great Britain, another permanent member of the Security Council, abstained.

The US expressed its opposition to the resolution on Monday and put forward a competing draft resolution.

Ahead of the expected US veto, Amar Bendjama, Algeria's envoy to the UN, condemned the fate of the text, saying that opposition signals support for “killing and hatred”.

“Each of us decides where they will stand in this tragic chapter of history,” Bendjama said before the vote.
