Air defense systems were "fiercely engaged" over the Iranian cities of Tehran and Tabriz in the early morning hours of Sunday local time, according to Iran's Mehr agency.

Sounds of explosions could be heard in Tabriz and eastern Tehran, state media Nour News reported. Air defense over central and eastern Tehran was "targeting enemy targets," it stated.
