(Patria) - The US and Japan plan the biggest upgrade to their security alliance since the two countries signed a mutual defense treaty in 1960, the Financial Times (FT) reported yesterday.
US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will unveil the plan at the White House on April 10.
Citing officials familiar with the situation, the FT writes that the plan will restructure the US military command in Japan to strengthen operational planning and joint military exercises.
Biden is expected to host Kishida on April 10 for a ceremonial event, with a lavish dinner as well as a political meeting.
Japan is a close ally that is crucial to the US strategy towards China, North Korea, and other Asian security issues, Hina reports.
The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Japanese government was unavailable for comment.
