(Patria) - The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that talks between the United States, Greenland, and Denmark began on Wednesday, as the three parties strive to resolve the diplomatic crisis over President Donald Trump's threats to the Arctic territory, Reuters reported.
The diplomatic talks come after months of tensions between Denmark and the United States, both NATO founding members.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a written comment to Reuters that senior officials from Denmark, Greenland, and the United States met to "discuss how we can respond to American security concerns in the Arctic while respecting the Kingdom's red lines".
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated earlier on Wednesday that the United States now has an established process regarding Greenland and that technical-level meetings will be held with Greenlandic and Danish officials on the matter.
Trump's repeated calls for US control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russia and China, threatened to fracture the transatlantic alliance before the dispute moved to the diplomatic arena.
