Rutte to be officially nominated as NATO Secretary General today

(Patria) - NATO will officially nominate Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to head the alliance today, Agence France Presse has learned from diplomatic sources.

Ambassadors of the 32 NATO member states are expected to confirm this nomination during a North Atlantic Council meeting, several diplomats in Brussels said.

The path for Rutte was cleared last week after the withdrawal of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis's candidacy.

Rutte (57) is expected to take over as NATO Secretary General on October 1, succeeding Norway's Jens Stoltenberg, who was appointed in 2014 and whose mandate has been renewed four times.

Rutte will lead the Alliance in a world full of political uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic and with Ukraine at war.

In addition to the conflict in Ukraine, he could also face a new presidency of Donald Trump if the American billionaire, highly critical of NATO's role, returns to the White House after the November elections.
