Russian Attack on Ukraine: Targeting Civilian Infrastructure and Energy Facilities, Five Killed

(Patria) - Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones overnight, killing at least five people and damaging infrastructure in many regions.

Four people were killed in the western Lviv region bordering Poland, where an industrial park in the regional capital was set on fire and parts of the city were left without power.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi called on residents to stay indoors. Explosions were heard in the morning hours as air defense was active from several directions.

In Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine, one person was killed and nine were wounded in a combined attack that also left more than 73,000 customers without electricity, said Governor Ivan Fedorov.

In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, the Russian attack caused a fire. Emergency services quickly extinguished the blaze.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged, besides in Lviv, in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Kherson, Kharkiv and Odesa regions, said Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

"Another deliberate act of terror against civilians," she wrote on X.

"Moscow continues to attack homes, schools and energy facilities - proving that destruction remains its only strategy."

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces fired more than 50 missiles and nearly 500 drones.

"Russia is again targeting our infrastructure – everything that enables normal life for our people. We need more protection and faster implementation of defense agreements, especially in the area of air defense," the Ukrainian president said.

Zelenskyy emphasized that "a unilateral ceasefire in the sky" could open the way to real diplomacy.

"America and Europe must act to stop Putin," he concluded.

Russia, which has not yet commented on the attack, has intensified strikes on Ukraine's energy grid in recent weeks as the fourth winter of war approaches.

NATO member Poland said it scrambled aircraft early today to protect its security.

"Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance have been put on the highest state of readiness," the Polish Operational Command said in a post on X.
