
(Patria) - Russian forces carried out a massive drone attack on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia late Tuesday, causing fires, injuring twelve people, and severely damaging buildings and vehicles, the regional governor said, Reuters reported after midnight.
Ivan Fedorov, announcing on the messaging app Telegram, said that several shops were destroyed in the attack, seven residential buildings and other structures were damaged, and cars were destroyed. He said that twelve people are being treated in hospital.
"A rescue operation is currently underway at twelve locations," Fedorov said in a video posted online.
"The maximum number of units from the State Emergency Services, the National Police, and our medical teams have been deployed."
Images posted online show firefighters battling fires in high-rise residential buildings and destroyed vehicles on the city streets.
Emergency services, writing on Telegram, said that the fires had been brought under control and that rescue operations were ongoing.
Russian forces occupy large parts of the territory in the Zaporizhzhia region and have recently made advances, although the city of the same name remains under Ukrainian control.
Yevgeny Belitsky, the Russian-appointed head of the Zaporizhzhia region, stated that Ukrainian forces attacked the power grid infrastructure in areas under Russian control. Belitsky, writing on Telegram, said that electricity was cut off for 40,000 users in cities under Russian control in the region.
