(Patria) - Overnight shelling by Ukraine caused "serious damage" to the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border, the region's governor said early Friday, Reuters reported.
Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a video posted on Telegram after midnight that city officials were holding an emergency meeting to devise an action plan.
"Unfortunately, I cannot wish you a good evening, dear friends," Gladkov said in a video shot in near darkness.
"The enemy shelled the civilian city of Belgorod. Everyone knows that we do not have military targets. Serious damage has been done. I went out to look around."
A post on the unofficial Russian Telegram channel Mash, which has sources in the security services, states that missiles hit the city, located about forty kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and that power outages occurred in some districts.
Ukrainian forces have been regularly attacking Belgorod and nearby parts of the region since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
