Russia seeks new UN Security Council meeting on Israeli-Palestinian conflict

(Patria) - Russia plans to request another UN Security Council meeting to discuss solutions to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, stated Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky, TASS reported.

"We will definitely convene another Security Council meeting. As practice has shown, no one but us dares to do it," he said.

"As for a resolution, I don't know how quickly we will reach the stage where we try to adopt a resolution again. It probably should first go through the General Assembly, which is a UN body where all 193 member states of the organization are present, and there is a rule that if the Security Council fails to exercise its functions in maintaining peace and security, this issue goes to the General Assembly," said Polyansky.

According to the diplomat, the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is scheduled for next week.

"There is a collective appeal from Arab and Islamic countries requesting the resumption of the special session. It is crucial that every country has a vote," he added.

The United States on Wednesday vetoed a resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict drafted by Brazil. Russia and the United Kingdom abstained from voting, while the other twelve members supported the draft resolution.
