Russia assumes presidency of UN Security Council, focus on BiH and Dayton Agreement

Russia has assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month, replacing South Korea in that position.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that his country will focus on reviewing the "implementation of the Dayton Agreement" during this presidency.

"This is very relevant because the situation there is critical. The goal is its collapse, threatening the rights of the Serbian people," Lavrov opined at a press conference after participating in the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, as reported by vijesti.ba.

In addition, the Russian side plans to convene a special session on October 24 to review the implementation of the UN Charter, which will also discuss BiH.

Lavrov emphasized that the session will be held "with the aim of analyzing and, if possible, reaching a practical conclusion on how to further develop the UN."

On the other hand, the Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić, expects that this session will result in an attack on the institution of the High Representative.

"In my opinion, this could be a blow to the Dayton Agreement itself," he said while appearing yesterday on "Morning for Everyone" on BHRT.

"Secondly, given that a decision is being made on extending the EUFOR Althea mission, I think that is also risky. I believe it is not in Russia's interest to be against the Althea mission - I think they will target Schmidt," Komšić stated.

Incidentally, the presidency of the UN Security Council rotates among member states, with each president serving in this position for one month.
