Russia carried out an attack on Kyiv, 18 people killed, day of mourning declared

(Patria) - Russia flattened part of a residential building in Kyiv on Tuesday, and at least 18 people were killed and 151 injured in the attacks.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated that it was the deadliest attack on Kyiv this year and emphasized the dangers of using such weapons in major cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the G7 summit in Canada that the attack once again proved the need for better air defense.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it used air, land, and sea missiles, as well as drones, to attack "objects of Ukraine's military-industrial complex" in the Kyiv region and the southern Zaporizhzhia province.

Ukrainian officials declared Wednesday a day of mourning for the victims of what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as one of the most horrific attacks on the capital during the war.

"Such attacks are pure terrorism. The whole world, the United States, and Europe must finally react as a civilized society reacts to terrorists. (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is doing this solely because he can afford to continue the war," Zelenskyy said, adding that Russian forces had sent 440 drones and fired 32 missiles at Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president told the summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations in Canada that the attack once again proved the need for better air defense.

"This is a matter of life and death," he said in comments published on Telegram. "We must continue to receive air defense systems and missiles and move towards localizing production in Ukraine," he added.
