Rubio: We are no longer giving weapons to Ukraine, but selling them

(Patria) - The meetings held yesterday in Washington are the first sign of a possible shift in the three-year war, assessed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He called the talks between Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, European leaders, and NATO leaders a "big moment," Reuters reports.

In an interview with Fox News, Rubio confirmed that key negotiations are "progressing," but emphasized that concrete results will take more time. This meeting represents the most significant diplomatic effort in the last three years of the conflict.

When asked about security guarantees, the inclusion of which the US had also promised by Donald Trump, Rubio replied that America is actively cooperating with allies to define their exact form.

"We are working on that right now," he said.

He also highlighted a change in the approach to military aid.

"The Ukrainians told us that the strongest security guarantee they can imagine for their future is to have a strong army moving forward, and that's another dynamic that has changed," Rubio explained.

"We are no longer giving weapons to Ukraine. We are no longer giving money to Ukraine. We are now selling them weapons, and European countries are paying for it through NATO. They are using NATO to buy weapons and transfer them to Ukraine. That's another big change in how this war has been approached, for example, solely under the Biden administration."

As part of the security guarantees, Rubio also mentioned a minerals agreement that Ukraine signed in February. This agreement includes the establishment of a new fund for investing in Ukrainian minerals, rare earth metals, and other valuable natural resources.
