(Patria) - US President Donald Trump only wants Palestinians to temporarily leave Gaza while the territory is reconstructed, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, AFP reported.
Trump shocked the world and drew condemnation when he said on Tuesday at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States could take over war-torn Gaza.
Trump's idea "was not intended as hostile. I think it was a very generous move - an offer to rebuild and to be in charge of rebuilding," Rubio told reporters during a visit to Guatemala.
Trump offered the readiness of the United States "to step in, clear the rubble, clear the site of all the destruction on the ground, clear it of all this unexploded ordnance," Rubio said.
"In the meantime, the people who live there will not be able to live there while you have teams coming in and removing the debris," Rubio said.
Trump wants to support "the rebuilding of homes and businesses and things of that nature, so that people can then return," the Secretary of State said.
